Summary · The One-Line Concept

Iceland Eclipse took 3,000 people to the edge of the world for two minutes of darkness.

Midnight Sun brings twice that many into the middle of Reykjavík for three days where the darkness never comes at all.

Iceland Eclipse was an expedition. Midnight Sun is a city takeover. That inversion, remote to urban, scarcity to accessibility, two minutes of night to seventy-two hours of light, turns a once-in-a-century astronomical event into a repeatable annual business.

The Opportunity

We just proved the demand,
then turned most of it away.

Iceland Eclipse sold 3,000 passes to guests from 75+ countries with 287 artists and speakers. Hellissandur, a village of 360, forced that cap.

Everyone priced out, boxed out, or sold out, plus the eclipse campaign's entire audience, is the founding market for Midnight Sun.

The Opportunity

Reykjavík removes the constraint
that capped the eclipse.

And mid-July is now genuinely vacant: LungA, the one festival that occupied the slot, ran its final edition in 2024. No domestic clash for Icelandic artists, crew, gear or press.

Midnight Sun · Iceland04
The Creative Spine

A festival with no night.

On 9–11 July the sun rises ~03:25 and sets ~23:35, roughly 20 hours of daylight. At solar midnight the sun sits only 3.5° below the horizon: no astronomical night, no nautical night. The darkest moment of the weekend is civil twilight.

The sun holds the golden-hour band from ~21:55 straight through to ~05:10, seven hours of low, raking light. The most valuable production asset the event owns, and it is free.

Nothing in the standard festival playbook works: no lasers, no darkness reveal, no headliner-under-the-stars. Every convention gets rebuilt, which is exactly why it will look like nothing else on the circuit.

The Venue · Hljómskálagarðurinn

The city is the infrastructure.

Reykjavík built a purpose-designed event lawn here in 2023: ISK 120–130m of sports-grade turf, drainage and integrated lighting, made "to receive crowds on major celebration days." Pride's 80,000-person parade already terminates here. Everything is walkable: no shuttles, no campsite mud, no parking fields.

The city's hotels, restaurants, bars, pools, museums and taxis are the festival's infrastructure, a fundamentally better cost structure than Snæfellsnes, and it shows up in the margin.

The Producers

IMXP + Secret Solstice

The Travel Business · A Second P&L

A few hours, or a few days.

Keflavík handled ~8.4M passengers in 2025; summer 2026 brings 28 airlines to 80 destinations. Airlift is not the bottleneck, accommodation is the business: tiered hotel packages bundled with the pass, room blocks locked twelve months out, camping to keep an affordable tier real.

Half-Day

Golden Circle express, Sky Lagoon, whale watching, Reykjanes, between dayparts

Full-Day

South coast, glacier hikes, and Snæfellsnes as a pilgrimage back to the eclipse site

Multi-Day

Ring Road, Highlands, Westfjords, Mývatn, 2 to 7 days, before and after

Signature

The glacier party, the lava-tunnel concert, the harbour boat party, the geothermal pool party

The signature side quests are the highest-margin, most sponsorable inventory in the model, the Secret Solstice inheritance worth keeping, generating the festival's best press for years.

What the city adds that the wilderness couldn't sell: an airline partner (Icelandair / PLAY, the most natural category in this market), a hospitality group, venue naming across the WHITE NIGHT circuit, the city's geothermal pools, city & destination partners (Reykjavíkurborg, Business Iceland), and geothermal / renewable energy.
